Take Action: Oppose H.R. 3897 to Protect Birth Control Access

Opposition forces are targeting Congress with a two-prong strategy to make changes to the Obama administration’s birth control policy that requires all health plans under the Affordable Care Act to provide contraceptive coverage without co-pays or deductibles. Just days after Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced the “Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 2012” in the Senate, Representative Steve Chabot (R-OH) introduced the House version, H.R. 3897. The bill aims to alter the President’s contraceptive coverage policy by allowing any employer to deny contraceptive coverage if it is against the employer’s religious or moral beliefs.

Leaving coverage decisions up to employers is entirely unacceptable and negates the goals of expanding access to healthcare under the Affordable Care Act. Contraception is used by 99% of women at some point in their lives, and that number is nearly identical for sexually active women of faith. In fact, a recent survey found that most Catholics agree that employers should be required to provide contraceptive coverage in health plans for employees.
The overwhelming support for contraception cannot be denied. Neither can a woman’s right to basic health care. Tell your Representatives to oppose H.R. 3897 and support the vast majority of women who expect all preventative services, including birth control, to be covered in their health plans without co-pays.
